Sometimes it’s harder to choose joy than other times. A friend of mine was buried Wednesday. She was only 61, and she had been her husband’s childhood sweetheart. He had never even looked at another woman twice. But for the last two months of her life he was praying that either she would get well and be free from pain, or die and be free from pain. He greeted me at the funeral with a broad smile, because at last she was free of pain. That is an extreme example of choosing joy. His great-grandfather was a servant in Holland; they came to Utah where they became entrepreneurs and leaders, and the family now is huge and well-respected. She left behind her husband, five children, and five grandchildren, with another on the way. But they have total faith that after death they will be together again; in the meantime, no one has to worry about her suffering any longer.

That is an amazing and encouraging story of persevering love and choosing joy in the midst of your circumstances. Thank you so much for sharing it with me and fellow readers. Please let your friend know I am thinking of him.
