Work It!

Life with a disability offers both opportunities and challenges.

Opportunities include (among other things)

  • Keeping focused on the important things ~ not majoring in the minors
  • Being an encouragement to others when they need it
  • Learning humility and how to accept help
  • Patience
  • There is ALWAYS another way to do something ~ learning creativity
  • Learning to prioritize

Those are a few things. Challenges include:

  • Keeping a right attitude when fatigue sets in and the pain level is high
  • Not voicing every complaint I have at the moment out of frustration
  • Learning the fine balance of striving to get better while not overdoing it
  • Not getting frustrated with my situation and taking it out on others
  • Getting stuck in a rut ~ or giving in to the situation
  • Using my physical, mental, and emotional resources in the wrong direction

Right now, I’m in a really good place. I am walking well, able to do some exercising, speaking and thinking clearly. I have been able to attend water aerobics all summer. I made many new friends and strengthened other friendships.

I could look for the things that aren’t so great if I wanted. Not driving for almost a year, and being at someone else’s mercy constantly. Not being able withstand the temperature outside (except for the pool) because of the excessive heat wave going through the country.

I have not yet found any profit from dwelling on the negative yet. This week, I did some cardio exercise for the first time in a few years! It felt great. I am going to keep going as long as I can. My motto is ‘Do as much as I can, the best that I can, for as long as I can’. Perhaps a shortened version of the Serenity Prayer.

I never know how long this period will last, but I’m making the absolute best of it that I know how.

Do you have goals that you are currently working on? Do you have others to help cheer you on to reach those goals? Is there something that is keeping you from believing for the best in your situation? Here’s a thought from someone named Paul. . .

Actually, I don’t have a sense of needing anything personally. I’ve learned by now to be quite content whatever my circumstances. I’m just as happy with little as with much, with much as with little. I’ve found the recipe for being happy whether full or hungry, hands full or hands empty. Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am. Phil. 4:11-13, The Message

I am not quite there yet. . . but I’m working on it.

This is so great….what an encouraging word…again!
Thank you so much for reminding me that I can “make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am”. Powerful words to walk in.
